Montgomery College and US-Asia Links, LLC, a Rockville-based company, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to designate a working relationship between the College and the company, based out of Rockville. The purpose of the memorandum is that US-Asia Links will play a direct role in assisting Montgomery College in forging new partnerships with distinguished higher education institutions based in Asia and Europe.
"Providing higher education in the 21st century requires partnerships with businesses, governments and other educational institutions," said Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard, Montgomery College president. "The world is interconnected in ways that we couldn't have imagined 50 years ago and that is why the College embraces collaborations like this one. US-Asia Links is thoroughly equipped to make connections on many different levels, forging bonds for MC in places where we do not yet have a significant footprint."
Pollard and George Dang, president and CEO of US-Asia Links, signed the MOU documents prior to a luncheon with local business leaders and elected officials. Dang formerly served on the Montgomery College Foundation board and is a 2012 honorary degree recipient from the College.
US-Asia Links, an official Trade Representative of the State of Maryland, matches corporations and investors in Asia with trade, partnership and investment opportunities in the US and Europe. Areas of focus include innovative technologies, health care, higher education, environmental sustainability, agriculture and agricultural products, infrastructure development and real estate development.
Montgomery College epitomizes the value and impact that a two-year college can have," Senior Vice President of US-Asia Links, LLC Larry Giammo said. "With its proven capacity in workforce development, Montgomery College can help other higher education institutions create programs designed to effectively and efficiently for a successful career."
Giammo, the former mayor of Rockville, attended Montgomery College before transferring to the University of Maryland. "My experience at MC was invaluable," he said.
The areas of focus for the memorandum include enhancing the College and Montgomery County’s international presence and reputation while strengthening the county’s economic position as a hub of international trade. Initial areas of focus for Montgomery College will include, but are not limited to, Turkey, Vietnam and China in the subject areas of business, biotechnology, health sciences, information technology and cybersecurity.
The signing took place in Montgomery College’s Bioscience Education Center located on the Germantown Campus and was followed by a tour of the building and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital, also located on the Germantown Campus.
